At least 38 people have died after a landslide struck Indonesia’s West Java province, as search, rescue and identification efforts continue, authorities said Tuesday.
The landslide hit the Cisarua area of West Java, killing at least 38 people, according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). In a statement, the agency said that as of Monday evening, 20 victims had been identified and returned to their families, while identification was still underway for the remaining 18 bodies.

Search and rescue operations resumed Tuesday morning with the deployment of additional heavy machinery to expand the search zone. The BNPB said around 800 personnel are involved in the operation, supported by nine excavators.
The disaster has also displaced at least 685 residents. Those affected are currently staying in village offices and other temporary evacuation centers, the agency said.
Authorities reported that the landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall over two consecutive nights, which saturated steep slopes in the mountainous Cisarua area.
Indonesia frequently experiences floods and landslides during the rainy season, which typically lasts from October to March.
Rescue teams remain on the ground as authorities continue recovery efforts and assess the full extent of the damage caused by the landslide.
